from last season. They earned at least a share of the title by defeating four-time defending Golden League champion Lancaster 79-76 Tuesday.

``Coming into the season we knew we had the ability to be a really good team,'' guard Nate Forte said. ``But to sit here and say we thought we'd be in the position we're in (a two-game lead), I'm not so sure we felt it would be that easy. But we'll take it. It's been a great year so far.''

Quartz Hill's dreams of finishing undefeated in the Golden League ended last week when it lost to Littlerock. The Rebels rebounded to beat Highland three days later.

Their ability to quickly put the loss to Littlerock behind them is the mark of a mature, talented team.

``It felt good to come back and win that game,'' Forte said.

Highland (14-10, 5-3) can secure second place with victories over Palmdale on Tuesday and Lancaster on Friday.

Lancaster (11-12, 4-4) has lost two games in a row to fall into third place, and with tough games against Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

That would be shocking for a team that's won at least a share of the league title four years in a row.

Palmdale (13-10, 4-3) is one game ahead of Lancaster for third place.

Antelope Valley is in contention for a top-three finish, but needs help. Antelope Valley has won the 11 games necessary to qualify for the postseason and coach Ed Campbell will apply for an at-large berth.

``Anytime you can play an extra game, especially a playoff game, it's going to be beneficial to the program,'' Campbell said. ``This year has been a learning experience for these players, and to see how far some of them have come over the course of the season, it's really been great. It creates excitement for the future of this program.''

--Agape: Three teams are in contention for the league title with three games remaining.

Antelope Valley Christian (16-6, 6-1) opened the door for Hesperia Christian (11-10, 6-1) and Apple Valley Christian (14-3, 5-2) by losing to Apple Valley Christian on Saturday.

Antelope Valley Christian rebounded to rout Joshua Springs 81-23 Tuesday.

``We definitely wanted to go undefeated, but we can't do anything about that now,'' Antelope Valley Christian center Chawn Johnson said.

--Delphic: Paracelete (8-12, 2-4) has an outside shot at third place and a guaranteed berth. The Spirits can also earn a shot at an at-large berth by winning their final three games.

coming from a player on a team that had gone 2-2 to open the Golden League girls' basketball season, but Lancaster's Brittany Benevidez could have been forgiven for her optimism when she talked of winning the league title.

At the time, Lancaster looked as if it would run away with the title with Palmdale being the only team capable of challenging the Eagles. Third place was Antelope antelope, name applied to a large number of hoofed, ruminant mammals of the cattle family (Bovidae), which also includes the sheep and goats. The North American pronghorn is sometimes called an antelope, but belongs to a separate, related family (Antilocapridae).  Valley's to lose and Quartz Hill looked like a fourth-place team, at best.

But as the season has turned out, Benevidez was right.

In the past two weeks, the top of the Golden League has become crowded and it might require a multi-way coin flip to sort the playoff teams.

``It's a real even league and everybody wants to win it,'' Antelope Valley coach Jake JAKE Jointly Administered Knowledge Environment  Gregory said after his team upset Palmdale 50-49 Wednesday night, creating a three-way tie for first with three games remaining.

``There's no dominating team out there and each team has two or three very good players.''

at the top. Tonight's Quartz Hill-Palmdale game is the first, followed by Antelope Valley-Lancaster on Tuesday and Quartz Hill-Antelope Valley on Thursday.

Lancaster, Palmdale and Antelope Valley are tied for first at 5-2. Quartz Hill (5-3) is a half-game back.

``I think everyone is (evenly) matched this year,'' Lancaster coach John Gallen said. ``But I also think the league isn't as good as it's been in the past. We could've won this league easily with the team we had last year. I think Palmdale could've, too.

``Each team has good players, but nobody has five consistent players. Quartz Hill has three, Palmdale has four or five, but not usually more than one or two in the same night. We've got (Andrea) Bobic, (Kim) Brandon sometimes, and sometimes a couple of other kids. Littlerock has three good athletes and Antelope Valley has two. (Shakira) Autry and (Kiesha) Adams are as good as anyone in this league.''

If Palmdale gets by Quartz Hill tonight, the Falcons should be able to hang on for at least a share of the title. But if Quartz Hill wins, the standings will remain crowded at the top.

``Our destiny is in our hands,'' Quartz Hill coach Mike Jones said.
