BOYS: LANCASTER LEAD MAN SNIDER IS TRYING NEW ROLE.Byline: VINCENT VINCENT Vital Information Necessary Centralized (movie, The Black Hole) BONSIGNORE AND RAMONA SHELBURNE Ramona Shelburne is an American sports journalist currently writing for the Los Angeles Daily News. Shelburne was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She attended El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills, California where she was a class valedictorian. Staff Writers Derek Snider knew things would be different for the Lancaster High boys' basketball team this year. As the only returning player from last season's Golden League championship club, Snider no longer could be a behind-the-scenes player operating in the shadows while older teammates handled the leadership and scoring responsibilities. Snider knew things would change drastically dras·tic adj. 1. Severe or radical in nature; extreme: the drastic measure of amputating the entire leg; drastic social change brought about by the French Revolution. 2. , that he'd be pushed to center stage as the team's primary voice, one of its prominent scorers and its most likely leader. But knowing all that and going through it are two different things. Snider has the scoring part down, but the reserved senior forward isn't as comfortable with the whole leadership thing, at least the vocal part of it. ``It's been an adjustment because I'm not the type of guy to be real talkative and rah-rah,'' Snider said. ``I'm the type of guy that does it by example.'' Not that Snider is backing away from his responsibilities. He's determined to speak up more, especially with Golden League play under way. He looks at his younger teammates and sees himself last year, when veteran players took him under their wing and showed him what being a varsity player was all about. They were there for him, and now Snider wants to be there for his new mates. Lancaster coach Jesse Parker is convinced Snider soon will get a handle on things. ``It's been a process, but he's coming along,'' Parker said. ``It's one of those things where he's not the most vocal guy around. He's pretty quiet, and he's more comfortable letting his play do all the talking. But he also understands we need that from him.'' If it were just about his actions on the court, Snider would be doing just fine. His scoring is up now that the ball comes to him more often, and he still provides the tough defense and rebounding Lancaster has come to expect from him. Now, he's adding the leadership part. - Vincent Bonsignore GIRLS: Facion Statement Sophomore Edwards has quickly become a key player for Quartz quartz, one of the commonest of all rock-forming minerals and one of the most important constituents of the earth's crust. Now Edwards is known as much for her talent as her flashy name (pronounced ``fashion''), which she says was ``my mom's creation.'' ``She's just got so much ability, it's just a matter of harnessing it and getting it all under control,'' said Quartz Hill coach Steve Brumwell. ``She's so fast and quick that she gets away with a lot of stuff on defense and I keep telling her that if she wants to play at the next level she's not going to be able to do that.'' This season, Edwards will have to work on more than her individual skills because Quartz Hill has struggled in recent weeks after opening the season with a 5-1 record at the Jasper Rebel Classic in Edmonton, Canada. Since the tournament, Quartz Hill has gone 4-6. ``I think were a really good team, we have all the talent,'' Edwards said. ``We just need to play together out there. I think my role is to get us started, like if no one is shooting, I'll take the shot.'' She's come a long way from that ``vomity feeling'' last year. - Ramona Shelburne COMING UP GIRLS GAME OF THE WEEK PALMDALE at ANT. TODAY --Quartz Hill at Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming. The Antelope Valley , 6 p.m. Should be a battle of the guards as Quartz Hill's Rhiannon McCrumb and Fa'cion Edwards go up against A.V.'s Shaquina Mosely and Sheena Crenshaw. --Other games: Palmdale at Lancaster, 6 p.m.; Littlerock at Highland, 6 p.m.TUESDAY --QuartzHill at Palmdale, 6 p.m. The Rebels have struggled recently and will be coming off a tough game against A.V. Friday, but they always are out for revenge against Palmdale. The girls on both teams are close, and this was one of the best games in the league last year. --Other games: Littlerock vs. Highland, 6 p.m.; Antelope Valley vs. Littlerock, 6 p.m. BOYS TODAY --Quartz Hill at Antelope Valley, 7:30 p.m. Antelope Valley is the lone unbeaten team in the Golden League after two games, and the Antelopes always are tough on the road. But Quartz Hill is deep and talented, and playing away from home doesn't concern the Rebels. --Other games: Palmdale at Lancaster, 7:30 p.m. TUESDAY --Antelope Valley at Littlerock, 7:30 p.m. Depending on what Antelope Valley does tonight against Quartz Hill, the Antelopes could be undefeated going into their showdown with the improving Lobos, who take pride in defending their home court. --Other games: Palmdale at Quartz Hill, 7:30 p.m.; Lancaster at Highland, 7:30 p.m. LOOK BACK --The Littlerock girls' basketball team scored a big victory over Quartz Hill, proving its record is for real. Palmdale blew out Highland by 27 points, but the Bulldogs always seem to get better in the second half of the year. Quartz Hill is trying to regain the form it had in Canada and had a team meeting Wednesday to try and work out the problems. In boys' basketball, Antelope Valley took care of business in the opening week of Golden League play, the only team to win both games and take an early edge in what figures to be a tough race. Palmdale lost both games, and Highland, Littlerock and Lancaster each split. ``There isn't much difference between teams, everyone seems to be pretty even in terms of talent,'' Lancaster coach Jesse Parker said. ``I don't expect that to change, so it's going to come down to execution and getting the breaks at the right time.''
