BOYS: IN NEED OF VICTORY PLAYOFFS ON LINE FOR SANTA CLARITA CHRISTIAN TONIGHT.

His Cardinals (10-12, 5-4 in the Heritage League) are on the brink of qualifying for the Southern Section Div. V-AA playoffs, but a loss in the game at 7 p.m. could knock the Cardinals out of postseason contention.

``We know we need to win because it probably takes at least 11 wins or more to finish third to make it,'' Dixon said. ``It's it's

a lot better than we were at the beginning of the season, but I'm not exactly super satisfied yet.''

Dixon is doing his part. The 5-foot-11 senior guard has been a steady force for an unpredictable team that has lost five of its games by at least 20 points. He's averaging more than 17 points per game but doesn't always get enough help.

``Besides scoring, Matt does a good job taking the pressure off the other guys,'' first-year coach James Mosley said. ``He handles the ball most of the time.''

Dixon's overall value never was more apparent than during a victory over L.A. Lutheran on Friday. Although he scored just seven points, he had 11 rebounds and six assists and helped hold L.A. Lutheran to the lowest point total of any Santa Clarita Christian opponent this season.

It was a good game, not just for Dixon but for everyone. This time, that is. Smooth performances haven't been so automatic this season.

``We're actually capable of playing really well,'' Mosley said. ``We're a dangerous team against certain opponents but just not consistent. Our record is a little deceiving because some of our players came out

late because they were busy with football.''

There's nothing Dixon can do about the past losses. But he believes Santa Clarita Christian is Christian I (krĭs`chən), 1426–81, king of Denmark (1448–81), Norway (1450–81), and Sweden (1457–64), count of Oldenburg, and founder of the Oldenburg dynasty of Danish kings.  capable of peaking at the right time.

``Overall, I'm pretty happy with how hard we've worked and the maturity of the team,'' he said. ``No, our record's not perfect. But I don't think that's a complete reflection of how hard we've worked.''

Over the years, Santa Clarita Christian's basketball team has had its moments. The Cardinals have won the league title the past two seasons and have qualified for the playoffs nine years in a row. In 2002, the team was 18-7 and reached the Div. V-AA quarterfinals.

``It's getting pretty important. This is a real key time for us,'' Dixon said.

GIRLS: Freshman stands tall in the post

Inemer a pleasant surprise as Hart's success continues

NEWHALL - All one needs to know about the impact of 5-foot-10 KaLana Inemer is she's the first freshman to start in the post in Hart High basketball coach Dave Munroe's 15-year tenure.

Inemer has provided thankless but important inside grunt work for an otherwise flashy group led by shooting guards The Shooting guard (SG), also known as the two or off guard,[1] is one of five traditional positions on a basketball team. Players of the position are often shorter, leaner, and quicker than forwards.  Ashlee Trebilcock and Taylor Lilley.

Inemer, who averages about six points, five rebounds and three steals a game, figures to play a key role if Hart (23-1, 9-0) is to win the Foothill League title at rival Valencia (18-4, 8-1) at 5:30 tonight.

``KaLana's biggest attribute is probably defense. She's shut down a lot of good players this year,'' Trebilcock said. ``She's kind of a role player but she's also got a lot more basketball knowledge and experience than people realize.''

Inemer said her teammates have helped her feel welcome and an integral part of the team, an important development for such a young player grouped with older classmates Classmates can refer to either:
  • Classmates.com, a social networking website.
  • Classmates (film), a 2006 Malayalam blockbuster directed by Lal Jose, starring Prithviraj, Jayasurya, Indragith, Sunil, Jagathy, Kavya Madhavan, Balachandra Menon, ...
.

``I fit in very well, and that's nice,'' she said. ``It's not like they give me a bunch of freshman chores to do.''

Inemer is close friends Trebilcock, a UCLA-bound junior who is considered among the country's top prep players. They hang out on campus, practice after school and even experiment with cooking recipes together.

``Nothing too fancy, though, usually chicken or tuna tuna or tunny, game and food fishes, the largest members of the family Scombridae (mackerel family) and closely related to the albacore and bonito. They have streamlined bodies with two fins, and five or more finlets on the back. ,'' Inemer said. ``We don't want to cook anything too high-tech because we don't want to mess it up.''

For Trebilcock, Inemer is like the little sister she never had - albeit an inch taller.

``KaLana's personality is just so fun. She brings a lot of laughter to the team,'' Trebilcock said. ``We've known each other for five years - since we were in elementary school elementary school: see school. . Once you get to high school, age doesn't really matter. We don't believe in cliques. We're just all high- schoolers.''

Munroe can't believe Inemer is a freshman. But he's relishing the opportunity to have her on the team for another three years.

``We've had some guards who have started as freshmen but never a post player,'' he said. ``You just don't see them so athletic and advanced but KaLana has played a lot of basketball. We wouldn't be where we are without her.''

BOYS: GAME OF THE WEEK

SAUGUS (18-7, 7-2) at CANYON (16-9, 5-4)

7 tonight

Outlook: Saugus, coming off a dramatic, last-second victory at Hart on Tuesday, must win for a chance to tie for the league title. Saugus also needs Valencia to upset Hart tonight. Host Valencia has won two in a row and is 9-3 at home.

Even if Saugus places second, a strong finish should earn it a first-round home game in the Southern Section Div. I-A playoffs.

The key matchup figures to be Saugus' B.J. HART (23-1, 9-0) at VALENCIA (20-4, 8-1)

5:30 tonight

Outlook: Here we go again. The region's elite teams face off for the league title in a showdown that probably will go down to the wire. She scored a career-high 34 against Valencia that night, and she hasn't been held to fewer than 22 despite playing limited minutes because Hart has won its past four by an average of nearly 26 points.

Valencia's Kelley Tarver and Day Weathersby are capable scorers.
