Vick and Smith have earned All-America honors, won a national championship at the club level, trained with the USA national program and are four-year varsity players at Thousand Oaks High. What they care about most now, though, is their role as leaders in what has developed into a deep and well-rounded Thousand Oaks team. ``It's the best team I think we've had since I've been here,'' Vick said. ``I think we can make a good run in playoffs. Smith has a team-high 47 assists, 86 steals and 42 field blocks. Smith set the team record for assists last season, when he had 56, breaking the record set by his brother, Thomas, in 2001. ``They're steady, wonderful, outstanding, great leaders,'' Thousand Oaks coach Mike Giles said of Smith and Vick. ``I knew they were going to be outstanding when they came in as freshmen.'' Vick, however, knew nothing about the sport, and had no swimming background, until he was 13 and stumbled upon a water polo practice after injuring his knee playing football. ``As I walked off the field, I heard the whistles over at the pool and went over to check it out,'' Vick said. ``The coach said to come back the next day with a suit. I've been playing ever since.'' Smith was on that South Coast club team with Vick and vividly recalls his teammate's emergence as a premier scorer. ``He was a goalie at first,'' Smith said. ``I remember the game we brought him out into the field. It was just supposed to be for a quarter. Then I remember us coming back to the huddle when the quarter was done, and he said: `That was so much fun.' And he's been playing in the field ever since. ``He's awesome.'' Vick credits experiences such as this past summer's trip to Hungary with the Waves club team for making high school games seem ``easier and less stressful in big games.'' Smith and Vick, who are being recruited by many of the same colleges, describe themselves as best friends. Developing a similarly strong bond among the rest of the Lancers was pivotal for team success after an influx of newcomers last season. ``I think we all play as a team very well,'' Smith said. ``All the guys are willing to work very hard. After our junior year, we all sat in the den and talked about how we wanted our last year together to be a good one.'' Giles is pleased with the result. ``Ryan and Daniel, they bring so much, but we couldn't do it without the other guys,'' Giles said. ``Those six (senior starters) are outstanding. ... I trust these guys more than any boys' team I've coached.'' heather.gripp@dailynews.com (818) 713-3607 ATHLETE OF THE WEEK BOYS Darrell Scott For Darrell Scott, the "Rachel's Challenge" founder of this name, see .
