BOYS' VOLLEYBALL: PERFECT RECORD INTACT WESTLAKE ROLLS PAST RIVAL SIMI WESTLAKE 3, SIMI VALLEY 0.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

WESTLAKE - It wasn't supposed to be this easy for the Westlake High boys' volleyball team. Not after the Warriors graduated some key players from last year's team, and certainly not after coach Greg Gibbons Famous people named Gibbons include:
  • Beth Gibbons (born 1965), British singer
  • Billy Gibbons, guitarist for ZZ Top
  • Cedric Gibbons (1893–1960), American art director
  • Christopher Gibbons (1615 - 1676), English composer, son of Orlando
abruptly resigned a week into the current season to take a job with the Pepperdine volleyball program.

The long faces and disappointment around the Warriors' locker room immediately after Gibbons left wasn't exactly the wave of enthusiasm most teams like to ride into a new season. With mere days remaining before its first match, Westlake was without a coach and seemingly without direction.

What the Warriors didn't lack was internal leadership. Foltz, one of the top players in the region, wasn't about to let his senior year slip by without making another run at a Southern Section championship. Whether that happens remains to be seen, but after their easy 25-20, 25-22, 28-26 victory over Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  on Friday, things are definitely looking up.

With the victory, the Warriors (6-0, 4-0) took a one-match lead over Simi Valley (5-1, 3-1) in the Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. ``We've been looking forward to this match for a while now,'' said outside hitter Matt Schneider. ``We were ready to play these guys tonight.''

The question now is whether they can match what last year's team did in the postseason. Westlake advanced to the Southern Section Div. I semifinals before falling to mighty Loyola of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. .

``We still have a ways to go, but we're definitely going to give it a shot,'' said Foltz, who finished with 44 assists and was flawless in leading Westlake's potent attack.

Foltz has help in the form of Schneider, who finished with 14 kills, Chris Dehner (12 kills) and Aaron Hedland (13 kills).

``This team passes so well, it just makes my job a lot easier,'' Foltz said.

Westlake was in control throughout after overcoming the Pioneers' initial surge at the beginning of game 1. Simi Valley jumped out to a 12-5 lead, frustrating the Warriors with strong hitting from Ian Jackson Ian W. Jackson is a long time Free Software author and Debian developer. But Westlake quickly restored order, using a 6-0 run to climb back in at 12-11, then a 7-2 run to take control at 18-14.

``It was sort of a match of runs all the way through, it's just that we made our count at the right times,'' Schneider said. ``They played a good game, we just picked our spots a little better.''
