Hollywood coach Edwin Sinesio gave his halftime advice over speaker phone Thursday while tending to family matters in El Salvador.

His Sheiks (9-1-5), trailing 1-0, came out to score three goals in the first eight minutes of the second half, en route to a 3-1 home victory in the first round of the City Section playoffs against Birmingham of Lake Balboa (13-5-4).

"He motivated them. He said just to play hard and play like they know how to play and give it their all," said Hollywood's girls' coach Jorge Maldonado, who was subbing in for Sinesio. "They know what they have, the talent they have, they just have to demonstrate it."

Fredy Rodriguez charged after a rebound left by Patriots goalie Robert Lopez, finishing off a free kick by Julio Rivas to tie the score.

"After that (goal) they controlled the pace, the momentum, the tempo of the game, they controlled everything and we just never got back in it," Birmingham coach E.B. Madha said.

A minute later, Lopez punched a shot out of harms way, only to topple over one of his defenders, leaving an open shot for Rivas.

With Hollywood running wild, Rivas scored again two minutes later, deking by Lopez 16 yards out and scoring into the empty net.

"He just left a week ago and he motivated us to work hard," Rivas said of his coach. "He's going to come back and see us as champions."

Gustavo Villalobos scored for the Patriots on a cross from Gerson Lazo in the 29th minute.

North Hollywood 1, San Fernando 1 (N.H. wins 6-5 on penalty kicks): Seventh-seed San Fernando was upset by No. 26 North Hollywood, suffering their first home loss this season.

The Tigers missed on three penalty kicks where they could have put the game away.

"It was tough," San Fernando coach Norman Mejia said. "We worked on it all week. The players that were missing at practice scored and the ones scoring at practice missed. They're kids and it's a lot of pressure."

Luis Gutierrez scored in regulation for the Huskies. Salvador Sosa scored for the Tigers.

Canoga Park 4, Fremont 1: Canoga Park (15-6-1), last year's City champion, scored three unanswered goals after Fremont of Los Angeles tied the score in the 25th minute to win at home.

Omar De la Piedra scored two goals for the Hunters and Oscar Hernandez and Jose Gonzalez each had one.

"It all came together pretty well today," Canoga Park coach Jake Gwin said. "We had worked on crossing our 'Ts' and dotting our 'Is' and we did pretty good at some of the things that were a concern for us. I was very impressed with the way they responded."

Monroe 4, Fairfax 0: David Diaz scored two goals as the host Vikings (10-3-9) defeated Fairfax.

Taft 3, Gardena 0: The Toreadors (16-4-2), the West Valley League champs and No.2 seed, topped Gardena as senior forward Agustin Cazarez scored one and assisted on two others.

El Camino Real 4, Wilson 1: Vince Scozarro scored two goals to lead the No. 19 Conquistadores (13-3-7) to a victory at No. 14 Wilson.

Sylmar 3, South Gate 1: Leo Maslu scored two goals and Edgar Corona contributed with two assists as the visiting Spartans (12-4-4) prevailed.

SOCES 4, Gertz-Resler 1: In the City's small-school division, SOCES of Reseda (5-4-5) prevailed with Fernando Mora's hat trick. Osvaldo Sandoval also had two assists for the Knights.
