BOYS' SOCCER PREVIEW: CLOSE FOOTHILL RACE IS EXPECTED.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

Foothill League play begins today and, after more than a month of boys' soccer tournaments and warm-up contests, contenders for the title are down to, oh, about four or five teams.

Two things are evident. One, there is no dominant team in the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. Two, this will be one of the most competitive Foothill League seasons in recent memory. Hart and Canyon usually contend for the title. This season, Valencia and Saugus also could contend, and Burbank can't be ruled out.

The matchup between Canyon, the defending Foothill League champion, and Hart, which won the previous two years, is the league's most significant. Canyon plays at Hart on Jan. 18. Then, in what could decide the league title, Hart plays at Canyon for the final game of the regular season Feb. 7.

``It will be a battle right down to the wire,'' Hart coach Robert Ciccone said. ``I wouldn't be surprised if it came down to the last game.''

But it is difficult to beat an opponent three times in a season, as Newbury Park found out when tied by Valencia in the Hart tournament after beating the Vikings 5-0 and 3-0 in two previous contests.

It's a sharp contrast to the nearby Golden League, where every coach concedes the league title to Quartz Hill.

The Rebels have beaten Hart, Canyon, Valencia and Saugus. Quartz Hill coach Andre Matalon said Saugus played his team the toughest in a 2-0 game. Saugus also beat Sylmar and tied Westlake.
