BOYS' SOCCER PREVIEW: ALREADY CLASS OF REGION, ECR LOOKS EVEN STRONGER TRANSFERS EXPECTED TO BOOST BID FOR TITLE.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

Confidence is something the El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

The Conquistadores like to believe they always have the potential to reach the City final. This season, they aren't likely to find many detractors. ECR ECR Efficient Consumer Response

, which has the talent to match its confidence, enters the season as the area's No. 1 team and a favorite for a second City title in three seasons.

If a core of returning players from last season's team that reached the semifinals wasn't enough, the Conquistadores gained two talented transfers from the Mission League.

Senior midfielder Ori Adrabi left Chaminade of West Hills before the Eagles completed their surprising run through the postseason.

of La Canada, also a first-team all- league selection, has moved to ECR and takes over as the starting goalkeeper.

``El Camino is the class of the region,'' Chaminade coach Mike Gwaltny said. ``Ori, to me, is the best midfielder in the region and they already had some good players.''

Those players include senior All-City sweeper Zack Feldman, defenders Jason Burbidge and Victor Choi, midfielders Gianni Facio and Tony Sangari and forwards Yan Falkinstein and Ede Ibekwe. There is also All-City junior forward Jason Lara, who missed the end of last season because of injury but was third in the City in scoring with 21 goals and five assists.

``Our strength is overall,'' said ECR coach David Hussy, whose team has 15 seniors. ``We're solid all around,''

The West Valley League title seems a certainty, especially since rival and last season's No. 1 City seed Birmingham of Van Nuys graduated the heart of its lineup. But the Conquistadores, who lost three starters of their own, are aiming much higher and have a difficult nonleague schedule for which to prepare them.

``We always have high expectations no matter who we lose,' Hussy said. ``Even four years ago when we made it to the City final, we expected to be there. It was just no one else thought of us as a team that could get there. So that's definitely our goal this year, to get to the City final.''

A look at other local contenders:

Hart of Newhall and Burbank appear to be battling for a title during the final week of league play.

History favors Hart because Burbank was one of the area's most dominant teams outside of league last season, but won just two Foothill games and the Indians continued to improve. But the combination of transfers Eric Lopez and Walid Kherbache with several returnees led by Daniel Cuello could give the Bulldogs a productive enough attack to overcome an inconsistent defense.

Defense is where Hart thrives. The Indians return just four starters, but two of them are junior goalkeeper Kyle Rynish and senior sweeper Aaron Johnson

Although Malibu improved, Calabasas was hit hard by graduation. Recent injuries eroded the Coyotes' depth even further, making for a far different team than the one that went 21-2-1 last season.

Junior forward Danny Barth remains as Calabasas' primary source of offense since the graduation of Itzik Rapaport, who scored 32 goals last season en route to establishing the school career scoring record (81). Defense is where the Coyotes have the most experience, allowing last season's all-league sweeper Gil Hoftman to move to the midfield in hopes of aiding the young offense.

Officially introduced as the TMS320C80, it combines RISC technology with the functionality of four DSPs on one chip.  Danny Ermolovich could be the most difficult to replace, but the Lancers have a deep talent pool from which to draw from because their lower-level teams are also coming off league championships.

Coach Andy Silva, transfer Jarrio Quintero and exchange student Markus Roth are new for Royal, but little else has changed for the team that went 20-8-3 last season. Mission: Chaminade has doubled its win total each year since Gwaltny took over three seasons ago. The Eagles don't play enough games to do it again, but they should improve on last season's 18 victories. No longer a surprise team, Chaminade is favored in the deep league.

Among the team's 10 seniors are Chris High and Jimmy Heathcote, who are being counted on to step up during their playmaker's absence.

Adjusting to a new coach as well as the loss of Schwarze could make for a slow start, but this is the same group that started 1-6, then lost just three more games last season.

: A league title is just the beginning of what La Canada believes it can accomplish. The Spartans have returning all-leaguers spread throughout the field, from Bassam Khan and Phil Kenny up front to seniors Chris Garnic and Mike Kotick, who split time in goal. Physical size could be one of the few drawbacks for the skilled and experienced team that envisions improving on last season's 16-2-3 record and No. 4 seed in Division IV.
