BOYS' SOCCER NOTEBOOK: UNFAMILIARITY A GOOD THING.

Byline: Ross Siler Staff Writer

As far as the Canyon boys' soccer team is concerned, ignorance is bliss when it comes to facing defending Southern Section Division I co-champion Leuzinger of Lawndale in the first round of the playoffs.

``I think playing against a team we're not familiar with is a good thing,'' Cowboys cowboys, in American history.

coach Pete Getz said. ``Everyone knows all about all the kids up here: what club team they play for, whether they play Olympic Development or not.

``But we don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

any of (Leuzinger's) players and they don't know any of ours. And I think it's to our benefit, even if they were the champs last year.''

Getz said he only has heard ``rumors'' about how Leuzinger plays and hasn't done any scouting scouting: see Boy Scouts; Girl Scouts.

, the coach isn't concerned about Leuzinger because of the lack of familiarity. As a point of reference, Canyon lost 3-0 this season to Quartz Hill, which shared the Division I title with Leuzinger last year.

``We're just preparing for it like it was any other game,'' Getz said.

Of greatest concern for Getz is getting his players ready after a nine-day break following last Thursday's regular-season finale against Burroughs of Burbank. The Cowboys resumed practice after taking five days off, and Getz has put an emphasis on conditioning for his players.

The coach also has identified three areas in which Canyon needs to perform well to win Saturday.

The first is playing defense cohesively. That came after the Cowboys gave up a pair of first-half goals to Hart off backfield mistakes and couldn't recover afterward.

The second is connecting with sophomore striker Michael Clegg Michael Clegg (born 3 July 1977 in London) is a retired English football defender who most notably played for Manchester United. The third and final point is to play one- and two-touch soccer, quickly working the ball upfield and forcing defenders to chase.

--Hart-breaking draw: Like Canyon, Foothill League runner-up Hart also has an imposing draw ahead of it. The Indians will play at Royal of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. , the Marmonte League's second-place team, on Saturday and could face nationally ranked Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  in the second round.

But coach Robert Ciccone said his team isn't afraid of anybody. Besides, it's the only way the coach figures the Indians (14-3-7) will be able to survive.

``You can either play the tough teams now or you can play them later,'' said Ciccone, whose team lost to Royal 2-1 in the second round three years ago. ``And we'd prefer to play them now.''

Hart will be without senior sweeper David Kurzis, who was lost to injury two weeks ago. Junior Jerry Greenberg, however, has filled in with no letdown letdown
