But it was the Spartans' supporting cast, led by Christian Nito's game- high 18 points, that made the difference in their semifinal game of the La Salle/Temple City Holiday Classic, giving La Canada's boys' basketball team -- ranked No. 6 by the Daily News -- an opportunity to defend its title with a 58-46 victory over the No. 16 Tornadoes (10-1) at Temple City High.

Nito scored 15 in the second half -- including three 3-pointers -- for La Canada (13-0), helping offset a 19-minute, 20-second scoring drought by Malik, who finished with 15 points, 10 below his average.

``Those threes were huge,'' said La Canada coach Tom Hofman, whose team benefited from Nito's third-quarter buzzer beater Buzzer Beater (ブザービーター   to ignite a seven-point run after Hoover closed to 35-34. ``This was a good win for us. This is the best team we've played by far.''

Zagaryan scored all 17 of his points in the final three quarters for Hoover, which received nine points from Shara Babakhanians.
