``They said we had nothing left,'' the younger Malik said. ``They told us we'd be lucky to get to a championship game, let alone win a title.''

Holding his third Most Valuable Player plaque under his arm following La Canada's 59-48 victory Saturday night over Valley Christian of Cerritos in the final of the La Salle/Temple City Holiday Classic, Adam Malik took great pleasure in proving his brother and the rest of the doubters wrong.

Malik scored 12 in the first quarter en route to a game-high 22 points, helping the Spartans (14-0) -- ranked sixth by the Daily News -- secure their third consecutive title at La Salle La Salle, city (1990 pop. 9,717), La Salle co., N Ill., on the Illinois River; settled 1830, inc. 1852. ``I don't think I would've bet the ranch on 14-0,'' said La Canada coach Tom Hofman, whose team built an 18-7 lead over Valley Christian (13-3) at the end of the first quarter and never led by fewer than seven the rest of the way. ``... But they've surpassed what I expected from them.''

Darren Ho added 14 points and Christian Nito contributed 12 for La Canada, which received seven crucial bench points from William Baldwin when Malik was sidelined with foul trouble in the second and third quarters.
