BOYCOTTING SCHOOL; ALARCON OFFERS TO INTERVENE.

Byline: Jesse Hiestand Staff Writer

State Sen. Richard Alarcon offered Friday to intervene in a dispute between school officials and parents who are keeping their kids out of class at Burton Elementary School Burton Elementary School may refer to:

to protest the school's year-round schedule.

Alarcon appeared at a protest of about 20 parents and 30 children at the school but said he did not agree with their tactic of keeping children out of class until the campus is returned to a traditional calendar.

``I do not support the boycott boycott, concerted economic or social ostracism of an individual, group, or nation to express disapproval or coerce change. The practice was named (1880) after Capt. ,'' said Alarcon, D-Van Nuys. ``Pulling kids out of school is an action of last resort.''

Still, several parents did just that Friday, as they have since the summer track started on Tuesday.

Organizers of the boycott said they had reached their goal of keeping about 100 kids home from school, but Principal Judy Kravitz said there were only about 12 absences on Friday, mostly among off-track kids taking summer school classes.

In a letter sent to Superintendent Ruben Zacarias on Friday, Alarcon offered his assistance in the dispute.

``I believe the will of the parents and students should be recognized, acknowledged and accepted,'' Alarcon said in the letter.

Alarcon said he would like to see the school off a year-round schedule unless the district can show evidence that enrollment would force 50 or more students to be bused, as projected in a disputed study that led administrators last year to automatically switch to a year-round calendar.

The study is now being re-evaluated, and administrators are open to the idea of going back to the traditional calendar, said Assistant Superintendent Assistant Superintendent, or Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was a rank used by police forces in the British Empire. ``I'm in the parents' corner,'' he said. ``I will lead the pack to put them back on a traditional calendar, but I cannot do that if we're going to be busing kids out of that school.''

Liechty said several options are under consideration, including making more space available by moving classes into rooms set aside for nonteaching activities.

Such temporary fixes may only work for another two years, he said, as the school enrollment of about 700 keeps climbing.
