BOY SCOUTS TEST OUTDOOR SKILLS IN REGIONAL CAMPOREE EVENT.Byline: Karen Thacker Community Columnist Boy Scouts and their leaders gathered April 24-25 for camping and competition in the annual Antelope Valley Boy Scouts of America Noun 1. More than 250 boys age 9 to 17 took part in a event, which for older boys included tests in building fires, setting up tents, marking trails, identifying map symbols, following compass readings, tying knots, and making and using a stretcher to carry a hypothetically injured companion. They had the chance to camp out two nights. About 500 visitors came to watch the scouts maneuver through 10 events. In flag raising, the Stooges of Troop 241 took first, the Big Dogs took second and the Patriots third. In the ``hot isotope'' competition - in which boys must maneuver a suspended item using ropes - first place went to the Little Green Men of Troop 334, second to the Eagles of Troop 541, and third to the Vikings of Troop 391. Obstacle course awards went to the Rug Rats of Troop 331 in first, the Rhinos of Troop 144 in second, and the Wolverines of Troop 586 in third. The uniform inspection was won by the Sharks, with the Flaming Arrows of Troop 37 in second and the Buffaloes in third. The campsite inspection was won by the Buffaloes, with the Jack Rabbits in second and the Eagles in third.
