The park employee on duty during the shooting wrote in his log book: ``I spoke to police about having someone start patrolling the area because lately, I have been hearing gunshots too.''

Another park employee, who declined to give his name in fear of losing his job, said the word is out that Lanark is not so safe.

``Parents are scared to put their kids in the programs because of what's happening,'' the worker said.

, whose district includes Lanark, said she will work to make sure park workers and police share information better.

``Our public places and spaces, such as parks, must be safe for the children, families and the elderly who use them. If they are not, we cannot call a neighborhood a safe neighborhood,'' Chick said.

Police encouraged residents to call the anti-gang unit at (818) 756-9141 to report problems at the park.
