BOY DIES IN CRASH AT BUS STOP; CHILD, MOM WERE SITTING ON BENCH.

Byline: Heesun Wee Daily News Staff Writer

A 5-year-old Sylmar boy was killed Friday when a dump truck collided with a Jeep and careened into a bus bench where the youngster and his mother were waiting.

The mother, 36-year-old Lucy Taylor This article is about the author. For the first American woman dentist, see Lucy Hobbs Taylor.

Four other adults were hospitalized, none with life-threatening injuries, police said.

``I feel bad for all that has happened,'' said Harry Rosas, Garcia's son-in-law. ``I feel for the families. We're truly sorry this mishap (language) MISHAP - An early system on the IBM 1130.

Taylor was taken to Granada Hills Community Hospital. Administrators there said she and her family have declined to comment on the accident.

Police did not release the identity of the driver of a Jeep Cherokee Jeep Cherokee can refer to five different SUV models produced by Jeep from 1974 to the present:

that was involved in a collision with the truck moments before the boy was hit.

Investigators worked through the day, hoping to piece together the events leading to the 11 a.m. crash.

So far, investigators have determined that the Jeep was traveling south on Balboa Boulevard and turning left when it collided with the dump truck, which was traveling east on Devonshire Street.

The truck went out of control and rammed into a fire hydrant, a traffic-light pole and finally the bus stop. The Jeep, in turn, hit a white Buick Skylark The Buick Skylark is a passenger car produced by the Buick division of General Motors. The model was made in six production runs. ``I saw people trying to run away from the bus stop,'' said Amadeo Haro, who was working nearby at the North Hills Car Wash when he witnessed the accident. ``I thought everybody was dead.''

A key question remains unanswered: Why were both the dump truck and Jeep in the intersection simultaneously?

``I heard a honk first by the truck and then heard the crash,'' Haro said. The Jeep was in the middle of the intersection when it was hit by the truck, moving at about 40 mph, Haro added.

Police had not determined who had the right of way at the time of the accident.

Fighting back tears, Rosas said his father-in-law is an experienced driver with about 30 years behind the wheel. Garcia had been driving his own truck and was heading to Sylmar when the accident occurred.

Garcia's wife, Hilaria Garcia, said he hauls dirt for a living to support his family of three. She said he's a very conscientious driver.

``The brakes and everything are in tiptop shape in both the trailer and the truck,'' she said. ``I was so upset. My stomach was real shaky.''

The bus stop has three benches side by side on the southeast corner of the intersection. Taylor and her son were sitting on one of them.

``The child died at the scene,'' Payne said.

What Chand saw instead was water from the broken hydrant shooting up some 40 feet, higher than the nearby Hughes Market sign.

``The woman driving the Jeep ran to the bus stop,'' Chand recalled.
