BOXING NOTEBOOK: GARCIA KEEPS HEAD STRAIGHT.

Byline: Michael Rosenthal Staff Writer

Could buddies Fernando Vargas Fernando Vargas (born December 7, 1977 in Oxnard, California) is an American boxer and two-time world champion, who won a bronze medal as an amateur at the 1995 Pan American Games in Mar del Plata. His nicknames include "Ferocious" and "The Aztec Warrior".  and Robert Garcia of Oxnard be any different?

junior middleweight champ, has a knack for finding trouble. He's scheduled to defend his title against Ronald Wright but only if he's not sent to jail for pending assault charges.

Meanwhile, Garcia was asked what he'd like to do after his boxing career: He wants to be a cop.

``I'm seriously considering that,'' said Garcia, who defends his IBF junior lightweight title against Diego Corrales tonight on the Mike Tyson-Orlin Norris undercard un·der·card

. ``I think a lot of kids in the neighborhood look up to me. I think I could do a lot of good.''

Vargas, the bad boy, commands much more attention and money than Garcia because of his remarkable skills, Olympic background and notoriety.

Garcia, like Vargas, is undefeated - (32-0, with 24 knockouts) - but has yet to receive universal recognition or anything close to a seven-figure payday. He'll make a career-high $200,000 tonight.

He outpointed Harold Warren in March of last year to win the title and has defended twice, the last time a decision over capable John John Molina Juan Molina (born March 17, 1965), better known as John John Molina in the world of boxing, is a former boxer whose career transcended boxing in Puerto Rico. ``That's the kind of fight I need, the kind of fight that will prove I'm a great champ,'' he said.

Garcia hasn't fought since the Molina fight, nine months ago. He had been scheduled to face Derrick Gainer in June but pulled out because he objected to the judges selected for the fight.

That layoff and the fact Corrales is 6-feet tall - Garcia is 5-7 - make this a potentially difficult fight.

``If he doesn't box, if he stands in front of me, that will be good,'' Garcia said. ``I heard he's going to box, though. It'll be a challenge.

``I was in Big Bear two months focusing completely on Corrales. I'll be prepared.''

``If I can get recognizable champions, it could be on pay-per-view,'' he said.
