Norris, winning his fifth straight bout, punished Pettway with a sold left-hand rib-cage shot 2:41 into the round. Pettway, grimacing in pain, barely managed to beat the count, but referee Larry Doggett waved off the bout.

"I got up. I was all right," said Pettway, the former IBF champion. "I got hit with a good body shot. I could have continued."

Some 10,000 fans showed up at the Richmond Coliseum for one of the biggest boxing nights in the city's history. At least 1,000, however, left before the main bout, which started well after midnight to accommodate Fox television.

Botha-Schulz rematch required: Francois Botha must give a rematch to Axel Schults because of a trace of steroid found in Botha's system after he won the IBF heavyweight title.

The IBF Executive and Championship Committees also fined Botha $50,000 after a hearing Saturday at Newark International Airport.

The rematch must take place within 180 day, with the stipulation that neither fights in the interim. The winner then has 120 days to defend the title against former champion Michael Moorer.

Botha, of South Africa, won the vacant title from Schulz, of Germany, on a controversial split decision on Dec. 9 at Stuttgart, Germany.
