BOXING: TONEY'S SUSPENSION IS CUT TO SIX MONTHS.Byline: ROBERT MORALES Staff Writer Boxer James "Lights Out" Toney had his 1-year suspension for using steroids cut in half Monday by the California State Athletic Commission at a downtown hearing. Toney, of Sherman Oaks, and Danny Batchelder both tested positive for steroids after they fought each other May 24 in San Jose. Toney, a former champion in three weight classes, won a split decision. Toney and Batchelder appealed their penalities, which included a 1-year suspension effective the day of their fight, and a fine of $2,500. Batchelder's entire sentence was upheld Monday when he did not show up for the proceedings. But Toney was there with his lawyer, Arnold Joseph, and his promoter, Dan Goossen. Toney tested positive for the steroids Stanozolol and Boldenone. Toney denied he knowingly ingested the drugs. "I don't need steroids to beat anybody because I'm the best fighter in the world," he said. "I'm a 20-year veteran. I'm a legend." Toney's suspension will end Nov. 24. He's still on the hook for the entire fine. robert.morales@presstelegram.com (562) 499-1338 |
