Earlier in his career, Sosa won minor titles—the WBC Fecarbox and Dominican Republic lightweight titles. , ranked No. 5 at lightweight by the IBF, and Lamar Murphy battled to a 10-round draw. Murphy, a former world-title challenger, might have gotten himself back into the title hunt with his performance. Sosa originally was scheduled to fight Angel Manfredy in an IBF title-elimination bout. However, Manfredy pulled out when he got cut on the left side of his eye during training.

If Sosa had won, there was talk of matching him with Manfredy in the elimination bout in January. Manfredy, who has unsuccessfully challenged for a world title four times, lost a controversial unanimous decision to Spadafora last October.
