BOX OFFICE SLUMP NOW A RECORD.

Byline: Greg Hernandez Staff Writer

Box office history was made Sunday, but not the kind the movie industry likes to trumpet on marquees or in newspaper ads.

For an unprecedented 18th consecutive week, weekend ticket sales trailed 2004 totals as top-grossing ``Batman Begins'' and new releases ``Bewitched be·witch

,'' ``Herbie: Fully Loaded,'' and ``Land of the Dead'' failed to stop a slump that now has year-to-date attendance down by nearly 10 percent.

``We have to break this slump,'' said box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian, president of Exhibitor Relations Co. ``Then we have to come back from an attendance deficit so that, at the end of the year, we don't end up with movie attendance being down for the third year in a row.''

The previous record was set 20 years ago when Hollywood suffered through 17 straight down weekends. The top 12 movies this weekend grossed an estimated $116.5 million, down 15.8 percent from the same weekend a year ago.

The revival of the Batman franchise, starring Christian Bale and directed by Christopher Nolan, has a domestic gross of $121.7 million to date.

The family film was released on Wednesday and has a five-day total of $17.8 million.

Disney executives were encouraged by the 19 percent jump in ticket sales ``Herbie'' enjoyed from Friday to Saturday.

Although ``Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith'' fell out of the top four for the first time, the film added an estimated $6.2 million to its impressive domestic total, which has now reached $358.6 million. This was enough to move ``Sith'' into 10th place on the list of all-time blockbusters.

While ``Worlds'' should attract big crowds, its opening weekend grosses will be compared to those of ``Spider-Man 2,'' which bowed the same week a year ago and grossed $88.1 million Friday through Sunday.

``It's going to be another tough week,'' Dergarabedian said.
