BOX OFFICE BUZZ FOSTER WILL BE GUNNING FOR NO. 1.Byline: GREG HERNANDEZ Jodie Foster Alicia Christian Foster (born November 19 1962), better known as Jodie Foster, is a two-time Academy Award-winning American actress, director, and producer. She has also won two Golden Globes, 3 BAFTA awards and a Screen Actors Guild Award, making her one of the few select as a gun-toting vigilante vigilante n. someone who takes the law into his/her own hands by trying and/or punishing another person without any legal authority. In the 1800s groups of vigilantes dispensed "frontier justice" by holding trials of accused horse-thieves, rustlers and shooters, and ? You bet. Moviegoers are gonna be intrigued enough to propel "The Brave One" to the No. 1 spot at the box office this weekend. The R-rated Warner Bros BROS Brothers BROS Benefits and Retirement Operations Section (King County, Washington) BROS Barnes and Richmond Operatic Society (London, UK) . action flick opens today and features the two-time Academy Award winning actress in the type of strong female role that has been successful in previous Foster films -- "Panic Room," "Flightplan," "Inside Man" and "Contact." Each of those movies has grossed $100 million domestically or came awfully close. Still, I think "Brave" will be hard-pressed to equal the $30 million opening achieved by "Panic" five years ago. But it should debut in the $20-$25 million range. JODIE'S COMPETITION: In the new release category it's a wide-open field for Foster. Her flick will most certainly push the well-received Western "3:10 to Yuma" from first place to second. But "Yuma" should retain at least half of its $14 million opening with the Russell Crowe-Christian Bale flick enjoying solid word of mouth. WOOD YOU WATCH? "Woodcock" has Thorton playing the hated former junior high school gym teacher of Scott's character who ends up marrying his mother (Sarandon). I missed the screening of this movie so I'm not gonna diss diss v. It just makes me feel sad that a fine actress like Sarandon, an Oscar winner for "Dead Man Walking" with four other nominations, is relegated to this genre. I think I'll watch a really good Sarandon gem like "Thelma and Louise," "Igby Goes Down" or "Safe Passage" at home instead. THE OTHERS: The fantasy-adventure flick "Dragon Wars" is targeted at young males. But it's got some hurdles to overcome: no big-name stars, low awareness, and it comes on the heels of a summer season that had some really good action flicks. If it manages more than a $5 million debut I will be walking around in a shocked stupor stupor /stu·por/ (stoo´per) [L.] 1. a lowered level of consciousness. 2. in psychiatry, a disorder marked by reduced responsiveness.stu´porous stu·por n. . SNEAKY: Shhhhh. Can you keep a secret? If you check movie listings on Saturday morning, you might see that you live near one of the 815 theaters that will be holding a "sneak peak" of the thriller "The Kingdom" starring Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Chris Cooper and Jason Bateman. STREAKING: If Jodie and company come through and combine to earn more than the batch of movies released on the same weekend a year ago, the domestic box office will have 10 consecutive up weekends. This should happen, but after that things get a bit dicey. A BOX OFFICE GIFT: Tyler Mane, the very tall actor who plays Michael Myers in "Halloween (2007)" told me at a pre-Emmy party this week that when his movie opened in first place with $26.3 million, it coincided with a landmark event in his personal life. "It was fantastic," he said. "I don't think anybody thought it would do what it did when it took the Labor Day box office record. It made history and it was actually a very good weekend for me because I got married on Labor Day. So I'll remember Labor Day for a long, long time. It was very nice to get that box office then get married." greg.hernandez@dailynews.com (818)713-3758 |
