[From Middle English astoned, past participle of astonen, , so historic, I'm afraid that this week's new releases -- "Step Brothers" and "X-Files: I Want to Believe" -- will enter theaters under a big bat shadow. The Batman sequel shattered records, with an opening-day total of $67.2 million, and an opening weekend of $158.4million. In its first week of release, it also achieved the biggest five-day total ($203.7 million), and became the fastest movie to reach the $200 million mark. With those stupendous stu·pen·dous adj. 1. I think the momentum will bring in at least $75 million more through Sunday, which would put "Dark Knight" over the $300 million mark in domestic grosses in record time. It could also become the year's top-grossing film after just 10 days of release. NEWBIES: Will Ferrell John William "Will" Ferrell (born July 16, 1967[1]) is an Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated American comedian, impressionist, writer and actor who first established himself as a cast member of Saturday Night Live, can have huge hits ("Talladega Nights") and big flops ("Kicking and Screaming"). Meanwhile, fans of Fox TV's "The X-Files" have gotta be champing at the bit to see Gillian Anderson Gillian Leigh Anderson (born August 9, 1968) is an Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning American actress, best known for her roles as FBI Agent Dana Scully in the American TV series The X-Files and Lady Dedlock in the BBC TV series Bleak House. and David Duchovny return as FBI agents Scully and Mulder in "I Want to Believe." It's been six years since the show went off the air so there should be strong interest. The problem is, I don't think that interest will extend much beyond the core fan base this weekend. I'm predicting an opening weekend of $20 million tops. HOLDOVERS: Besides "Knight," the musical "Mamma Mia" is another second-week film that should continue to do well even if it's on a much smaller scale. The Meryl Streep vehicle is the one movie out there right now that is drawing a lot of women, so it should finish in fourth place with about $16million in ticket sales. Rounding out the top five will be Will Smith's "Hancock," which should take in an additional $9 million or so -- enough to take it over the $200 million mark in domestic grosses. greg.hernandez@dailynews.com 818-713-3758 |
