BOWLS: Warwicks take inter-county title.

WARWICKSHIRE Ladies upset the form book to win the national Johns Trophy inter-county championship with a 126-107 final victory over Devon. It was the county's first success since 1967.

Playing at Royal Leamington BC the county returned four winning cards in their 19 shots triumph with their highest rink victors being Jean Clinton, Pat Bonser, Audrey Cox and Chris Grigg who finished 30-13 ahead.

Pal Harvey, Madge Morgan, Ruth Carey and Maureen Tims won 27-17, Diana Medhurst, Barbara Harsant, Pat Rushold and Jean Perry won 23-14; Nora Halc, Janet Pooler, Judy Williams and Maureen Edwards Maureen Edwards is an Australian actress, who remains best known for her role as Matron Rosemary Prior in the television series A Country Practice.

In the semi finals Warwickshire beat Cumbria by 127-105 and Devon accounted for Essex by seven shots. Warwickshire skips semi-final scores were:

Avenue Leamington's Simon Gilbert won five games at Worthing over the weekend to become the new England junior singles champion, Thornfield's Brian Lever bowed out of the champion of champions singles with a 21-16 first round defeat, and Thornfield's Matt Lever, Dave Furness, Colin Hall and Graham Howes lost 21-16 in the first round of the fours.
