BOWLING BENEFIT STRIKES AT HEART OF CANCER.

VALENCIA - The balls and the money kept rolling in Sunday during a bowlathon fund-raiser benefiting the City of Hope.

``To have this many people where we never had a chapter before is phenomenal,'' said Monica Solorzano, campaign coordinator for City of Hope, adding that 150 people showed up for the five-hour event. ``We wanted to bring some new blood into the City of Hope as well as do some outreach into the community.''

City of Hope is a national cancer institute known for its innovative research and treatment combating cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS HIV/AIDS Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome  and other serious illnesses.

The two local groups are among 200 throughout California that help raise about one-fourth of the research and treatment center's $350 million budget. Last year, auxiliary groups raised $83 million.

Besides the $10,000 raised at the bowlathon, officials said, they have raised an additional $12,000 within the community.

``People wanted to do this,'' said Darrell Carpenter, a City of Hope staff doctor who operates in the Santa Clarita Valley. ``They kept calling us. They were bursting at the seams.''

 City of Hope has offered a variety of programs to local residents.

``We're not looking to raise money for the City of Hope in Duarte,'' Carpenter said. ``We're looking to raise awareness to have the City of Hope grow in the Santa Clarita Valley.''

Participants in the bowlathon were asked to seek pledges. There was also a silent auction, raffle and donations from various businesses within the community.

``We had people turn in as much as $500,'' Solorzano said.

Pat Karam, 48, of Canyon Country came to the event with her husband Tony Karam and said that the event was not only fun but truly worthwhile.

``I believe in the cause,'' she said. ``I like to see cancer research and City of Hope come to this area.''

Pat Karam, who lost her mother to cancer a year ago, attends one of the local cancer support groups and is also a cancer survivor.
