CASTAIC - The Castaic Union School District board is scheduled to vote tonight on new school boundaries to accommodate a third elementary campus expected that will help ease crowding when it opens later this year.

If approved, Northlake Hills elementary would reduce enrollment at the district's other two schools from more than 800 to about 680. The plan also would return most fourth- and fifth-grade classes from Castaic Middle School to the elementary campuses, said Teresa Elkholy, a boundary committee member.

``This will relieve all the elementary schools elementary school: see school. ,'' said William McDermott, an assistant superintendent Assistant Superintendent, or Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was a rank used by police forces in the British Empire. It was usually the lowest rank that could be held by a European officer, most of whom joined the police at this rank. . ``It's been a long, tough road, but we're looking forward to opening a new school.''

The proposed assignments would be mandatory, but the district would consider requests to remain at a specific school depending on space, Elkholy said.

--Castaic school would serve the Hillcrest Parkway area and students living south of Parker and Sloan Canyon roads, west of The Old Road. But only fourth-grade classes would return to the school, with fifth-graders remaining at Castaic Middle School until a proposed fourth elementary opens around 2005.

``If we brought all the fifth-graders down, the schools would have no room for the additional students,'' Elkholy said. ``Both Castaic and Northlake would both have more than 800 students - more than they're designed for.''

``Someone may live really close to a school, but they might have to drive around a ridge to get to the school,'' she said. ``We wanted the schools to have a cushion for growth, and we wanted to balance the number of students.''  districts. But officials hope new schools coupled with a boundary plan would help the district keep up with the 10 percent growth it has experienced over the past three years.

``You need to know where the kids are coming from,'' McDermott said. ``For example, we found 55 to 60 percent of our new kids are not coming from new houses, but from the homes that are already in the area. ... Sometimes we get a general idea, but we're always surprised.''
