Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

As high school baseball and softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  competition enters the final week of the regular season, here's a look at the players making the biggest impact:

BASEBALL

Matt Aidem, Valencia, Sr. - After one of the most productive all- around seasons in regional history as a junior last year, Aidem continues to shine as both a pitcher and leadoff-hitting left fielder. He is batting .426 with four home runs and is 7-1 with 0.76 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 46 1/3 innings INNINGS, estates. Lands gained from the sea by draining. Cunn. L. Dict. h. t.; Law of Sewers, 31. . Johnny Hay, Canyon, Soph. - Although his season has been hampered by a back injury, Hay is the brightest prospect among a group of starting underclassmen at Canyon. He's batting .460 with two home runs and 16 RBI in 17 games, and he's a fine center fielder with a strong and accurate arm.

Thomas Milone, Saugus, Jr. - Milone, who needs one RBI to tie a school record and is also the Foothill League's winningest left-handed pitcher, is among the Southland's top underclassmen. He's batting .408 with four home runs and 33 RBI in 76 at-bats, and he's 6-1 with a 2.13 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 42 2/3 innings.

Wes Pascolla, Valencia, Sr. - Pascolla is the league's most dominant catcher offensively and defensively. He's batting .451 with seven home runs and a team-high 29 RBI, and he's allowed just one stolen base this season.

Steve Sanchez, Hart, Sr. - Sanchez has made quite a comeback after missing nearly all of last season because of academic problems. He's one of the league's top left-handed pitchers with a 3-2 record, 1.23 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 45 2/3 innings. He's also batting .389 in 36 at-bats.

Matt Valaika, Hart, Soph. - Valaika has done a fine job following in the the footsteps of his brother, Chris, one of the Foothill League's greatest shortstops who is now at UC Santa Barbara. The younger Valaika has come on strong lately, batting .443 with six stolen bases and 11 RBI. His six errors are an impressive total for a high school infielder.

Cole Valancius, Hart, Sr. - Despite missing three games because of injuries, Valancius is among the league's most productive outfielders. He's batting .421 with six RBI and 11 walks.

Danny Worth, Valencia, Sr. - After switching to shortstop midway through last season, Worth has been the team's key defensive player every since. Not just a fine fielder, he's also developed into an exceptional hitter with a .403 average, four home runs and 20 RBI. Committed to Pepperdine.

Breanne Javier, Valencia, Jr. - Javier bats third in the lineup on one of California's most potent teams. The first baseman is hitting .349 with three home runs and 21 RBI - more than twice as many RBI as anyone else in the lineup.

Victoria Kemp, Saugus, Fr. - The league's brightest young prospect, Kemp is making a bid for all-state recognition in her first season.
