BOSTON TECHNOLOGY AND HONGKONG TELECOM CSL SIGN CONTRACT

WAKEFIELD, Mass., April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Boston Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: BSTN) today announced that it has signed a contract with Hongkong Telecom CSL to provide its CO ACCESS(tm) voice processing platforms to the Hong Kong-based cellular provider. Boston Technology worked with Jardine System Products (Jardines) in negotiating the contract, which spans three years and has an estimated value of $2 to $3 million for the first year.
The project with Hongkong Telecom CSL began over one year ago when the cellular provider launched a tender selection process. Ian Stone, managing director of Hongkong Telecom CSL, stated, "We selected Boston Technology because of its commitment to evolving technologies and international standards both for cellular network interfaces and central exchange interfaces. In addition, we believe the CO ACCESS platform to be a flexible and powerful platform with a proven track record, suitable to our needs for serving customers in a highly competitive marketplace."
Boston Technology is acting as the prime contractor on the project. The company expects to ship its first CO ACCESS system to Hong Kong in the second quarter of 1993.
Hongkong Telecom CSL will use the equipment to provide enhanced services for its new Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) cellular network services offering, which is expected to be available throughout Hong Kong beginning this summer. These enhanced services will include voice messaging, call answering and a short message center service (SMS) to provide text messaging capabilities similar to alpha-numeric paging. The new advanced GSM digital cellular network will allow a greater number of customers access to many more features and services cost effectively.
John C.W. Taylor, president and chief executive officer of Boston Technology commented, "Hong Kong and other countries in the Pacific Rim are very advanced technologically. Consequently, we anticipate a very high acceptance rate of voice messaging and other enhanced services by cellular subscribers. We are very excited about the potential for this market."
Paul DeLacey, general manager of Boston Technology International, added, "This is the first installation of GSM with enhanced services and SMS in Asia, which we believe is the future direction of cellular telecommunications. We are very much looking forward to working with both Hongkong Telecom CSL and Jardines, as well as our other partners, to deploy enhanced services to cellular subscribers because of the extent of cellular phone usage by the people of Hong Kong and their readiness for more sophisticated services. In addition, we see this as a stepping stone into mainland China for future enhanced services deployments."
Hongkong Telecom CSL is a leading provider of business and consumer-oriented telecommunications products and services, including cellular and paging. It operates the largest single cellular network in Hong Kong, with extensive roaming arrangements throughout China. Hongkong Telecom CSL is a subsidiary of Hongkong Telecom, the local and international telephone provider for Hong Kong and a member of the Cable & Wireless Group.
