BOSTON TECHNOLOGY'S CO ACCESS SYSTEMS TO PROVIDE
VOICE MESSAGING SERVICES TO HURRICANE VICTIMS IN FLORIDA
WAKEFIELD, Mass., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Boston Technology (NASDAQ: BSTN) announced today that BellSouth is using its CO ACCESS(tm) platforms to provide voice messaging services to victims of Hurricane Andrew in South Florida. Using Memory Call(R) service, BellSouth's Southern Bell customers can receive messages from any telephone while they await recovery of their telephone service. The messages reside on a Boston Technology CO ACCESS system at Southern Bell's central office. An estimated 150,000 people either lost telephone service or access to their telephones in the wake of the hurricane, which devastated the region on Aug. 24.
BellSouth is offering MemoryCall service free of charge for the first 60 days and is waiving the service installation charge for customers in Dade and Broward counties. MemoryCall service is available to BellSouth residential and business customers in areas of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, as well as in Florida. In South Florida MemoryCall service is available in both Spanish and English. Boston Technology is one of several suppliers of voice processing equipment to BellSouth.
The service enables subscribers to receive messages when they are away from their telephones or when their lines are busy. In addition, MemoryCall service allows subscribers to receive messages from callers when their phones are temporarily out of service, as in the case of Hurricane Andrew in Florida.
As part of its disaster recovery program, Boston Technology shipped equipment to BellSouth within three days of receiving the order and installed it within 72 hours.
"This use of voice messaging service is a version of Boston Technology's Virtual Mailbox application which allows people to communicate without actual telephone service," stated Preston Riner, regional vice president of Boston Technology. "While Virtual Mailboxes are typically targeted to underdeveloped countries where phone service is limited or unavailable, it is also an ideal application for this sort of situation and we hope that it will help significantly in this and other future crisis situations to make the recovery and clean-up process go more smoothly."
BellSouth is an Atlanta-based international telecommunications holding company. Its subsidiaries offer local telephone service in nine Southeastern states and mobile communications service worldwide, provide advertising and publishing services, and market and maintain stand-alone and fully integrated communications systems.
Based in Wakefield, Boston Technology is the industry's technology leader in providing network-based voice processing systems. The company develops, manufactures, markets and supports enhanced voice processing platforms for Regional Bell Operating Companies, interexchange carriers, long-distance providers, cellular and international telecommunications companies.
