GIANFRANCO ZOLA Gianfranco Zola OBE (born July 5, 1966 in Oliena, Sardinia) is a retired Italian footballer. The Hammers boss revealed talks have hit a stumbling block as the striker thinks long and hard about whether to leave European champions Barcelona - despite being only a fringe player there.

"The alternative is to come and play for West Ham - which is obviously a smaller club. I can understand his concern. He is human.

"We are a good club with a good future but maybe he doesn't see that. We will see what happens" Zola is also trying to secure a loan deal for Bayern Munich's Italian striker Luca Toni, 32.
