BORO EYE UP BARRY; EXCLUSIVE.

Byline: By MARK GUIDI

MIDDLESBROUGH are weighing up a pounds 2million move for Rangers skipper Barry Ferguson Barry Ferguson MBE (born Hamilton, Scotland, February 2, 1978) is a Scottish professional footballer who plays in midfield. He currently plays for and captains both Scottish Premier League club Rangers and the Scotland national team. .

The Premiership side put the 30-year-old at the top of their shopping list after midfielder Gary O'Neil last night moved nearer the exit door at the Riverside.

And the swoop comes as Ferguson demanded showdown talks with chairman Sir David Murray David Murray may refer to:

 over his Ibrox future.

The Scotland captain (left) is seeking a meeting with Murray to thrash out what the club want to do with him.

Ferguson, who rejoined Gers in 2005 after a two-year spell with Blackburn, has been unsettled with talk in the past week of him being sold to help ease the club's financial problems.

MailSport can reveal Middlesbrough are now the club keenest on the midfielder as they bid to pip bitter rivals Newcastle to his signature.

They could move for Fergie this week if they sell O'Neil to Portsmouth. Boro may well rake in rake in

around pounds 5m and will consider using pounds 2m of that in a bid to land the Ibrox ace.

Ferguson - 31 next month - does not want to leave Gers but fears he may have to.

His contract expires in the summer of 2010 and he'd love to sign an extension that would guarantee him a testimonial.

But he does not know if Gers want to give him a new deal and if they do he realises it is likely to be on a much lower rate than the weekly wage he enjoys at the moment.

The club may want him to accept as much as a 50 per cent pay cut with greater emphasis on more lucrative appearance money. One way or another, Ferguson would like to meet Gers owner Murray to find out exactly what's going on What's Going On is a record by American soul singer Marvin Gaye. They have had an excellent working relationship for more than a decade and Ferguson hopes to be given assurances he has a future at Ibrox.

The player's agent John Viola flew into Glasgow on Thursday and his client's future tops his agenda.

Gers boss Walter Smith has told Ferguson he wants him to stay but the decision may be out of his hands.

Should Ferguson have to go, a move to the north east of England The East of England is one of the nine official regions of England. It was created in 1994 and was adopted for statistics from 1999.
