GARETH SOUTHGATE was booed off the park as Boro's bid for a miracle escape from relegation all but ended.

Villa striker John Carew cancelled out an opener from Tuncay Sanli (right) to leave the Riverside club staring at Championship life.

Boro now need a big win at West Ham on the final day and for other results to go their way.

Southgate admitted being deeply hurt by the full-time jeers but insisted his troops can pull off a great escape. He said: "Emotions run high after a game like that but sometimes these reactions have a short-term impact on you.

"I'd be lying if I said it didn't hurt but I am big enough to handle it." "We're now relying on everything else going for us and it's a difficult position.

"The last Sunday of the season can hold so many twists and turns so we've got to keep going. But if it doesn't go for us then so be it." Villa boss Martin O'Neill said: "We had chances to finish the game but Middlesbrough were always pressing.

"We were a bit lethargic in the first half but in the second we got our hands dirty and performed well.

"There was a bit of tiredness as it's been a long season but we'll try and finish strongly."
