BORLAND SETS WINDOWS 95 PLANS IN MOTION; Launches Smooth Sailing to Windows 95 Campaign.

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 7, 1995--Borland International Inc. this week sets in motion extensive new Windows 95 product plans and promotional activities for software developers, according to according to

3.
Gary Wetsel, president of the software tools company.

Wetsel outlined the plans at the Sixth Annual Borland Developers Conference under way here. Nearly 2,000 corporate, government and independent developers are attending the four-day technical meeting.

"Our marketing and product strategy is designed around Borland tools that take advantage of Windows 95 while preserving customer investments in existing Windows applications," said Wetsel. "Today, we are previewing products that let developers move to Windows 95 or Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  when they're ready, and allow them to take full advantage of these 32-bit operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap. ."

5.5, which shipped last month, is Borland's first product to embrace the new user interface features of Windows 95, including long file names File names that exceed the common eight plus three (8.3) character limitation used in DOS and Windows 3.1. Unix, Mac and Windows starting with Windows 95 support long file names.

  • Windows 3.0
  • Windows 3.1x
These should not be confused with the first three releases of Windows NT, which were also given "3.x" version numbers, i.e.
applications to Windows 95 without modifying the underlying code. Visual dBASE has been designed to automatically detect whether the computer is running Windows 3.1 or Windows 95, and then take advantage of that operating system's capabilities and user interface.

"Visual dBASE gives me and my clients a huge advantage because it allows us to manage the move to Windows 95 when we are ready," said Jim Sare, a database developer based in the Detroit area. "For those customers who want to stay with Windows 3.1 for awhile, I'm able to distribute sophisticated applications that run in only six megabytes of RAM. For clients moving to Windows 95 early, I'll be able to deploy high-performance applications with the new look-and-feel on the day that the operating system operating system (OS)

ships. The real beauty of the Visual dBASE solution is that this transition is automatic and transparent -- it requires virtually no extra work on the developer's part."

Borland previewed for the first time Delphi for Windows 95/NT, Borland C++ Version 5.0, and Paradox for Windows 95/NT.

Borland C++ 5.0 is the only product that enables developers to create Windows 3.x, Windows 95, Windows NT and DOS applications, from one development environment.

"It will be a couple of years before users move completely away from Windows 3.x," said Paul Cronk Verb 1. cronk - utter a hoarse sound, like a raven

The town is bordered on the north by Manchester, New Hampshire and on the east by Derry, New Hampshire. The population was 23,236 at the 2000 census. . "Being able to build 16-bit and 32-bit applications from the same product is critical for developer productivity. Borland's approach gives Borland C++ a unique advantage over competitive products."

Delphi and Delphi Client/Server for Windows 95/NT are application compatible with the current version of Delphi. Developers can compile their existing applications under Delphi for Windows 95/NT and get full 32-bit computing with complete support of Windows 95. The new 32-bit version of Delphi will enable developers to take advantage of the latest systems technology, including OLE (Object Linking and Embedding See OLE.

"The new 32-bit optimizing compiler's phenomenal performance will give us a technological advantage over the competition," said Louis Parks, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. . "Another big bonus is the easy path from 16-bit to 32-bit development. We are already running our Delphi applications as a client on Windows NT. With the new OLE Automation and OCX (OLE Control EXtension) A component software technology from Microsoft that enables a Windows program to add functionality by calling ready-made components. Generally called "OLE controls" or "OLE custom controls," they appear to the end user as just another part of  support, we know Delphi will allow us to establish a leading position in our industry with the pending release of Windows 95."

Paradox for Windows 95/NT shows its strength in data compatibility across Windows 3.x and Windows 95. It supports all previous Paradox for Windows 5.0 applications and data. Developers can extend their investment in applications by incrementally migrating their users while building new Windows 95 programs. Applications developed with Paradox for Windows 3.x can co-exist and share data with Paradox for Windows 95/NT applications on the same network server. This helps corporations to migrate smoothly to Windows 95 at their own pace. In addition to allowing users to take full advantage of the new functionality of Windows 95, the new version of Paradox also breaks new ground in developer and end-user ease-of-use with an array of new and enhanced experts. Paradox for Windows 95/NT will also be included in Novell's PerfectOffice for Windows 95 Professional.

"We're excited about the upcoming version of Paradox for Windows 95/NT," said Kevin Smith of Softbite International, an application development consulting firm based in Elmhurst, Illinois. "Many of my clients are interested in having database applications run under Windows 95, and we're excited about building new applications. The new user interface changes in Windows 95 provide an excellent opportunity for Paradox for Windows to improve its feature set and usability in the coming version."

Borland said its Windows 95 products are scheduled to ship in the third and fourth quarters of its fiscal year (ending March 31, 1996).

Smooth Sailing to Windows 95

Marketing programs, under the banner "Smooth Sailing to Windows 95," include participation in Microsoft Corporation's national and regional Windows 95 launches. Borland will also be an active participant in the electronic launch of Windows 95 on the Internet beginning August 24. The electronic launch will allow users to link to Borland's World Wide Web site (Borland Online) from the Windows 95 site, accessing information about Borland's Windows 95 products as well as selected technical papers from the Borland Developers Conference. Advertising will appear in major computer publications reinforcing the theme. Borland has also launched a variety of channel promotions under the "Smooth Sailing to Windows 95" theme.
