Drink free zone The sight of half empty pints of lager left on walls could be a thing of the past in Huddersfield town centre

Ban on street drinking

HUDDERSFIELD could become West Yorkshire's first 'dry' town centre.

New plans have been unveiled which would give police the power to order street boozers to stop drinking and hand over their glasses and bottles.

The new 'dry' zone would be all of Huddersfield town centre contained within the Ring Road - as well as Chapel Hill and the Folly Hall complex.

Now a final consultation period has eben launched before the ban is implemented.

The council has liased with police on the scheme to be sure that drink has been a factor in anti-social behaviour in the selected area.

The official name for the project would be an Alcohol Control Zone (ACZ ACZ Ace Combat Zero (game)
ACZ Air Combat Zone
ACZ Assembly Coder's Zenith
ACZ Ashtekar, Corichi, Zapata
).

An ACZ is an area where the consumption of alcohol in a public place may be restricted.

Police can demand people stop drinking and for them to be given the alcohol to dispose of To determine the fate of; to exercise the power of control over; to fix the condition, application, employment, etc. of; to direct or assign for a use.

There is already a smaller ACZ in Batley.

Other large scale ACZs as proposed here are up and running in Liverpool and Hull.

Earlier this year a report was put before Kirklees Council's Cabinet which said the figures for Kirklees predict a 47% increase in woundings compared with the levels recorded in the previous three years.

Figures from the British Crime Survey The British Crime Survey or BCS is a systematic victim study, currently carried out by BMRB Limited on behalf of the Home Office. The BCS seeks to measure the amount of crime in England and Wales by asking around 50,000 people aged 16 and over, living in private households,  show that a glass bottle is used as a weapon in around 10% of violent assaults, and a recent study of accident and emergency departments in Britain found that glass bottles had been used in 85% of assaults causing facial injuries facial injuries,

Community Safety Inspector for Kirklees Insp Nick Harvey Nicholas Barton "Nick" Harvey (born August 3, 1961) is a British politician. He is the Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for North Devon.

Nick Harvey was born in Chandler's Ford, Hampshire and was educated at the Queen's College in Taunton and the Middlesex Poytechnic
 said he welcomed the plan.

He added: "It is all about common sense.

"This plan is felt necessary to try and reduce incidents of anti-social behaviour and also violent crime.

"This includes violent assault.

"Nobody wants to see gangs moving from pub to pub clutching bottles and glasses.

"These can be used as weapons and cause serious damage.

"We want people to know that Huddersfield has a vibrant nightlife but is a safe community."

Insp Harvey said the town's burgeoning cafe culture had nothing to worry about.

He added: "The places that are licensed for people sitting outside are exempt from this.

"The vast majority of people in Huddersfield are sensible and I'm sure they will want to work with us to make the town a safer place for everyone."

* The council is asking for people's comment about the scheme. Anyone who is interested or has something to say should write to: Proposed Designation Order, Kirklees Safer Communities, Estate Buildings, Railway Street, Huddersfield, HD1 1JY.
