Sue, the largest Tyrannosaurus Tyrannosaurus (tīrăn'ōsôr`əs, tĭr–) [Gr.,=tyrant lizard], member of a family, Tyrannosauridae, of bipedal carnivorous saurischian dinosaurs characterized by having strong hind limbs, a muscular tail, and short  rex skeleton ever found, was named for the woman (Susan Hendrickson) who discovered the creature's remains in the late summer of 1990. The account of how she was found and the ensuing legal problems over who owned the fossil makes for interesting reading. Sue, unlike most other fossils, went to the auction house, where she was sold to the Field Museum in Chicago for over $8 million.
