THE WOMAN ON THE BUS by Pauline McLynn (Review, pounds 14.99) HHH 

The Father Ted actress kisses goodbye to the hapless heroine of her earlier novels and takes a tip or two out of Maeve Binchy's bestselling book. Like all good dramas, the action mostly takes place in the pub and follows what happens when Ruth arrives drunk in a close-knit Irish village. For all its Gaelic gaiety there's a serious message here, and McLynn delivers it with some style.
