Rhiannon McNally and her young daughter are spending their first night alone in a big creepy house, which they've just inherited. Then something goes bump in the night and, armed only with a tennis racquet, Rhiannon sets out to investigate.

Oh, and there's a raging storm outside and there's also a power cut and, guess what? Yes, Rhiannon's certain someone is standing just around the corner. Swinging her racquet, she lands a hefty swipe straight into the muscular stomach of - of all people - Kane Healey. What the hell is he doing here?

Kane is a ruggedly handsome alpha male. He's also the father of Rhiannon's daughter, Lizzie, but Rhiannon and Kane were history before the girl was even born. However, through a quirk quirk

Battles of property and the heart follow but, this being a Mills & Boon, Rhiannon is warm and easy to like, while Kane is strong and charismatic. And, although there's plenty of sexual tension, the bedroom door remains firmly closed on any explicit detail.

However, this is not the end of the story, by any measure. Mills & Boon is marking its centenary on, of course, Valentine's Day. While reviews of its books rarely appear, and few bookshops display copies (most are sold by mail order), 10 million M&Bs are sold in the UK each year - that's almost one every five seconds.

Each month, the company publishes 50 new titles, now under 10 different romantic series, from Modern Heat - which does unlock the bedroom door - to Medical, which invariably in·var·i·a·ble

And every book has a guaranteed happy ending. Trish Wylie's Her One And Only Valentine, which is being marketed under the Romance series, ends with Rhiannon and Kane smooching at the local Valentine Ball.

If only real life was as rosy. No wonder someone once said that reading a Mills & Boon was as effective as popping a Valium.

Happy birthday, M&B.
