Construction on the 25,000-square-foot Barnes & Noble store should begin within the next two weeks, with the store opening either late this year or in early 2000, said Gary Safady, managing partner of O & S Holdings of Encino, the Palmdale Marketplace owners.

The 34,000-square-foot Linens N Things store should be open later this year.

``This is the right market at the right time,'' Safady said of Palmdale. ``Avenue P and 10th Street (West) is ground zero for retail, and we intend to capitalize on Cap´i`tal`ize on`

Palmdale has been working steadily to draw major chains such as Barnes & Noble, said Mayor Jim Ledford. The addition of a Dillard's department store, now under construction at the nearby Antelope Valley Mall, is helping attract retailers.

``Dillard's is a real plum. It's opening the eyes of other retailers,'' Ledford said. ``Barnes & Noble will create interest and bring it (Palmdale Marketplace) to another level.''

The store will cost between $15 million and $20 million to build and will employ about 175 people.

Other recent additions to the marketplace include a Woody's Unfinished Furniture store, a Sally's Beauty Supply and a Mattress Discounters.
