Byline: Mary Beth Alexander Daily News Staff Writer

The Panorama City Library will soon come under the wrecking ball to make way for a state-of-the-art facility double the size.

The new library will feature more books as well as computerized computerized

The 30-year-old Panorama City branch ``was just too small, inadequate to serve this community,'' said Fontayne Holmes, assistant director of branches for the Los Angeles Public Library

It contrasts with deconstruction, which is the taking down of a building while carefully preserving valuable elements for re-use. . It is expected to be torn down within the next few weeks, Holmes said.

Groundbreaking for the new facility will take place at the same site Jan. 27.

Meantime, for patrons who still want to check out books but don't want to travel to the next closest branches in Van Nuys or North Hills, the city is setting up a bookmobile at the Panorama Mall.

``We have so many young children in the community,'' said Louise Marquez, manager and marketing director of the Panorama Mall. ``I really believe the library has to stay open here.''

The mall at the corner of Roscoe and Van Nuys boulevards helped make the bookmobile possible, because it offered space free of charge, as long as the library branch remained closed, Holmes said.

``We really have to thank them. This is really a real community service,'' Holmes said.

It will take about 18 months to two years to complete the new library, which will be about 12,500 square feet and have the capacity for about 60,000 books, Holmes said.

The $4 million project is being funded through a 1989 voter-approved bond measure, Holmes said.

The Panorama City branch serves a community of about 90,000 people, Holmes said.

Marquez said the branch has always been heavily used by children from nearby schools.
