BOOKING CELEBRATED LOCAL LIBRARY HOSTS FREE EVENT HONORING THE HISTORY OF BOOKS.

Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  - From writing ancient hieroglyphics to binding modern novels, the art of making books will be displayed during a free event Saturday at the Grant R. Brimhall Library The Grant R. Brimhall Library serves as the main Thousand Oaks Library building. It is controlled by the Thousand Oaks Library System, which also controls the Newbury Park Branch Library. The Grant R. Brimhall Building is located on Janss Rd. near State Route 23. .

The ``History of Bookmaking bookmaking

 - Evolution from Stone to Paper'' will trace the evolution of books with demonstrations, hands-on projects, educational programs and activities for kids during the day-long event.

``(W)e are tremendously excited. I believe in my heart that this is something people should take the time to see,'' said Carol Wisniewski Knowles, president of the Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library and the event organizer. ``There are extraordinarily talented people who want to share (their talents). It will be a fun, visual experience and it will strongly impress young people.''

The event promises to cover a range of interests, with hands-on demonstrations in bookbinding bookbinding. The art and business of bookbinding began with the protection of parchment manuscripts with boards. Papyrus had originally been produced in rolls, but sheets of parchment came to be folded and fastened together with sewing by the 2d cent. There will be demonstrations in stone painting and one in paint making by a representative of the Chumash Nation. A computerized program will allow visitors to translate names from English into Chinese.

On display at the event will be a colonial printing press from the International Printing Museum, a hand casting from 15th century-style printing type and rare and old books.

Guest authors will be on hand, along with actors in costume from the Kingston Shakespeare Company portraying historical figures.

There are also several opportunities for children to take part in the activities - they can create hieroglyphics with chalk on a section of the library's walkway walkway Rehabilitation medicine An instrument used to measure the timing of foot contact and or position of the foot on the ground  and teachers from the Braille Institute will show children how to write in Braille.

The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the library, 1401 E. Janss Road. Admission is free and refreshments are available for purchase. For information, call Carol Wisniewski Knowles at (805) 497-0291, or on the Web at ftol.org.
