HOUSTON, June 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The Booker T. Washington High School Academic team from Tulsa, Okla., today won $50,000 in scholarships in the 1992 Texaco Star National Academic Championship, following seven days of correctly answering tough questions such as "The hair of a dog and the feathers of a bird are part of what basic animal body system?" (see note for answer)
The national champs outsmarted Clinton High School from Clinton, S.C., to capture the national title. The final score was Booker T. Washington 380, Clinton 350. The second place team won $25,000 in scholarships.
The 1992 Texaco Star National Academic Championship began on Saturday, June 6, at Rice University, with 82 championship academic teams, representing some of the brightest high school students in the country, vying for the national title.
The four-student teams answered tough questions on subjects ranging from physics to philosophy during the seven-day national tournament.
Four students from Montevideo, Minn., faced with the choice of attending their high school graduation or competing for the coveted national title, held their own ceremony while at the competition, complete with recorded "Pomp and Circumstance."
Members of the national championship team include Sarah Bruce, Jim Steichen, John Defenbaugh, and Matt Bruce.
"Texaco salutes the academic achievements of these young men and women," said Carl B. Davidson, president of the Texaco Foundation.
The Texaco Star National Academic Championship is sponsored by Texaco in cooperation with Rice University, which provides accommodations and facilities for the competition.
