"Palestine" first appeared as a series of comics, but the series has been published as a graphic novel. If you haven't had the pleasure of reading a graphic novel, which is a fairly new genre, this is an excellent one to try. But don't expect the lightweight fare of traditional comics. Graphic novels often have serious subjects, and "Palestine" is no exception.

, he gains insights into this most complex conflict. He learns that there is not just one, or two, or three Palestinian lines of thinking, but that they are united in utter despair at their loss of freedom. The graphics and text combine to form a touching and sad portrait of a situation that belies easy answers.

For those who have little knowledge of the related historical events, starting with the formation of Israel in 1948, "Palestine" presents a tutorial of sorts. Sacco's self-deprecating humor offers a few light moments to relieve the inherent heaviness of story. This is a worthwhile and unconventional book for those willing to move out of their comfort zones.
