Believing there was much more story begging to be told, she began an exhaustive search to fill in the details of the Reys' lives. Borden looked at hundreds of letters, notebooks, newspaper interviews and photographs. She spoke with people who had known the couple in six countries, and visited the addresses gleaned from diaries, travel papers, visas and postmarks. What came out of her dedication to piecing the details together is this beautifully executed biography of two remarkable authors who survived during the most difficult of circumstances. Book One begins with the story of two Jewish children, family friends, growing up in Hamburg, Germany. After college, both Hans and Margret ended up in Brazil, married and began a life of writing and drawing together.
