 will be the format of a literary Dia de los Muertos celebration today at Tsunami Books, 2585 Willamette St.

Admission is free to the 4 p.m. event. "Among Headstones" author Shannon Applegate will serve as sexton, presiding over a group that includes fiddler Linda Danielson, Kalapuya elder Esther Stutzman and poet Kit Sibert. Michael Strelow will also read a cemetery scene from his novel ``The Greening of Ben Brown,'' an Oregon Book Award finalist.

Audience members who dress in black will receive a free piece of angel food cake and a paper fan.

Eugene writer nominated for Endeavor Award

Eugene writer Jerry Oltion is a finalist for the Endeavor Award, which recognizes a distinguished science fiction or fantasy book written by a Pacific Northwest author.

Oltion was nominated for ``Paradise Passed'' (2005, Wheatland Press). He is the author of more than 100 short stories, novellas This literature-related list is incomplete; you can help by [ expanding it].
This is a selected list of novellas that have gained fame and/or critical and public acclaim.
 (2002 Nebular Award-winning ``Abandon in Place'') and novels (``The Getaway Special'').

The Endeavor awards, with a $1,000 prize, is named for the ship of Northwest explorer Capt. James Cook. Winners will be announced next month.

Contest asks children to write to favorite author

Local children who write a letter to their favorite author could win a trip to Washington, D.C., for themselves and their parents.

The trip is the top prize in a "Letters About Literature" contest sponsored by the Library of Congress Center for the Book and Target stores.

Young readers have until Dec. 1 to write a personal letter to an author, explaining how his or her work changed their view of the world or themselves. The Oregon Center for the Book will select the top essayists The following is an abbreviated list of essayists, arranged alphabetically by last name (years of birth and death, if applicable, and country of birth, are noted in parentheses).

He and his writings are sometimes identified with the Pacific Northwest.  Symposium - Poet and essayist Naomi Shihab Nye leads the annual Lewis & Clark College event.
