Library announces winners

of teen short story contest

SPRINGFIELD - The Springfield Public Library recently presented writing awards for its first Teen Writer's Short Story Contest.

Two first-place recipients were selected: Erica LaShot for her story `Turning Point: The Night That Changed My Life' and Haley Songchild for her story `Zari

Zari is a type of thread made of fine gold or silver wire used in traditional Indian and Pakistani garments. This thread is woven into fabrics, primarily made of silk to create intricate patterns.
.' They both received a $50 cash prize, a journal and a certificate.

The contest, which ended Jan. 31, solicited entries from students ages 12 to 19. Rules of the contest stated that each story must begin with the sentence, `I am alone in the library.'

Honorable mentions were awarded to Whitney Alexander, William Alexander, William, known as Lord Stirling (stûr`lĭng), 1726–83, American Revolutionary general, b. New York City.  Brady, Jasmin Brown, Gaia Brusasco, Hannah Marie Chapman, Isaias Giron, Kara Kara (kär`ə), river, c.140 mi (230 km) long, NE European and NW Siberian Russia. It flows N from the N Urals into the Kara Sea, forming part of the traditional border between European and Asian Russia. It is navigable in its lower course.  Hansen, Katrina Linde-Moriarty, Robert Lopez Robert Lopez (born February 23, 1975) is an American composer and lyricist of musicals best known for co-writing the Broadway musical Avenue Q, for which he won a Tony Award. , Kellie Musgrove, Nick Pappas Nicholas Pappas is a solicitor from Sydney, Australia, and also the current chairman of the board for the South Sydney Rabbitohs rugby club.

Pappas' most significant involvement with the Rabbitohs prior to being chairman was his heading of the legal battle to keep the club
, Nick Ryan, Larissa Satterwhite, Shelby Simmons and Stephen Staszewski. Each student receiving an honorable mention also collected a journal and a certificate.

All the stories submitted to the contest are on display in the young adult section of the library. For information, call 726-2237.

Foundation gives $10,000

for the Fern Ridge Library

VENETA - The Oregon Community Foundation has awarded the Fern Ridge Library Foundation $10,000 in the first of two years of potential funding to support capacity-building efforts, including organizational development and training, marketing, donor cultivation cultivation, tilling or manipulation of the soil, done primarily to eliminate weeds that compete with crops for water and nutrients. Cultivation may be used in crusted soils to increase soil aeration and infiltration of water; it may also be used to move soil to or  and fundraising

The foundation seeks to implement a multiyear capacity building plan to open up new resources and enhance its effectiveness in serving the Fern Ridge Library District.

The Oregon Community Foundation, established in 1973, has managed charitable funds donated by individuals, families and businesses to enhance and support the quality of life in their communities.

Staff training to close

Springfield library for a day

SPRINGFIELD - The Springfield Public Library, 225 Fifth St., Springfield, will be closed Thursday. Library staff will be in training that day and unavailable to the public.
