BOOK CLUB HOLDS FUND-RAISER FOR HOME.

The Book Club Buddies of Calabasas held a luncheon Saturday to benefit the Motion Picture and Television Retirement Home, where they hold monthly meetings.

The Book Club Buddies was founded in 1998 by twins Alicia and Nicholas La Maina of Calabasas, as a way to read and share new books with their friends while school was not in session. The organization now performs civic projects, such as helping underprivileged children attend summer camp and providing comfort to patients at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. .

``We wanted to raise some money for other people to have fun,'' said Alicia, 12.

The club meets monthly at the retirement home, where children read and share their books with residents at the facility.

``It's fun going over to the home and reading to them,'' said Nicholas. ``You feel like you've accomplished something afterward.''

Alicia and Nicholas plan to expand their efforts by raising money for a recreation department at the retirement home.

Kay Shafton and Herb Hirsh of Encino won the top prize for the second consecutive year for raising more than $18,500 at the Alzheimer's Association's 11th annual Memory Walk.

Hirsh, on the association's board of directors, and Shafton belong to the Memory Club, based at California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an .

CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  professor Steven Oppenheimer received a $288,686 grant from the National Institutes of Health to continue an ongoing research project on human development and cancer.

``The grant is an honor. It is much appreciated and will help my lab accomplish its research goals,'' said Oppenheimer.
