Byline: Carol Rock Staff Writer

VALENCIA - By expanding their literary horizons, people can help the libraries in the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  update collections and present programming not covered not covered Health care adjective Referring to a procedure, test or other health service to which a policy holder or insurance beneficiary is not entitled under the terms of the policy or payment system–eg, Medicare. Proceeds will help the Friends of the Library provide children's programs and support modernizing the Valencia circulation desk.

``We started out with the computers at the Jo Anne Darcy Library in Canyon Country,'' said Dorothy Anderson Anderson, river, Canada

``Our sale is unique because our Friends group serves three libraries and a bookmobile,'' explained Anderson, as she and two other women lifted boxes of books in the community room of the Valencia library. ``Donations are still coming in, so we process them and get them out for the people coming to the pre-sale Friday.''

The Friends have been hosting book sales for at least 20 years.

``It started in Newhall, and we served tea and cookies,'' Anderson recalled. ``If we made $300 or $400, we were thrilled thrill

. Now, we can make $4,000 with a one-day sale here.''

The group used to do four-day sales that involved off-site gathering and sorting, but found space for the sorting was at a premium. Previously donated space disappeared when the real estate market picked up, and the volunteers realized that it was better to concentrate their efforts on accepting and sorting on-site in Valencia and Canyon Country.

The largest book sale on Saturday will be held at Valencia; the Newhall and Canyon Country libraries have ongoing sales of discontinued dis·con·tin·ue

More than 100 people are expected to come to tonight's special pre-sale. Pauline Nossaman, who has been named as the county library Adult Volunteer of the Year, said that several of the early birds will be booksellers, with boxes and drapes drape

. It has been very interesting to watch the people who come to the sale; it's a lesson in psychology.''

Anderson said that some people come to the sale loaded with books they bought at the previous sale to donate to the cause, leaving with just as many, if not more, newly purchased books.

``There is a man who always brings back the mysteries he's read so we can sell them again,'' she said. ``And the romance novels have been recycled about 20 times. People bring in their lists because they can't remember which ones they've read.''

Most hardcover books are priced between $1 and $3, with some newer hardbacks and coffee table books going for as much as $20. Paperbacks are 50 cents each and romance novels are 10 cents. Videos, CDs and books on tape are also available, priced at $1. DVDs are $3 and magazines are available for 10 cents a copy.

The Valencia library is located in the county center at the corner of Magic Mountain Parkway and Valencia Boulevard.
