The 60ft Liverpool Clipper was named at a ceremony last night at the Albert Dock conducted by Canon Nicholas Frayling, of Liverpool parish church. The ECHO-sponsored Clipper will be open to the public at the Albert Dock all weekend as part of the Mersey River Festival, which is expected to attract more than 250,000 people. Record-breaking yachtsman Sir Robin KnoxJohnston, chairman of race organisers Clipper Ventures, said: ``We are delighted to be part of the Mersey River Festival. ``Successful visitor attractions such as the UK's biggest free maritime festival underlines why Liverpool is the host port for the 2002 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race was conceived in 1995 by well-known yachtsman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and together with William Ward, founded Clipper Ventures, a company that would run the race. The first race set off a year later on 16 October 1996. .'' Cllr Warren Bradley, executive member for leisure and culture, said: ``The Mersey River Festival is a truly amazing event and we're delighted the Liverpool Clipper has come home for it.'' The Clipper will leave Liverpool on Saturday, June 21, to take part in a race to the Isle of Man Noun 1.
