The shortage in Tehachapi reflects a nursing shortage across California, particularly in the Central Valley, which has the lowest ratio of nurses per capita in the state. The hospital also offers up to $1,000 to a current staff member who recruits a nurse. A minimum continuous service of one year is required to get a bonus.
