BONO'S E11.5M 'BARGAIN' BUY.

Byline: By NICOLA TALLANT

BONO'S swanky Manhattan pad has made a list of the top 42 residential properties in the Big Apple.

His apartment in the North Tower of the San Remo building is believed to have cost the rock star US$15 million (EUR11.5 million\) a number of years ago.

But now a book about New York architecture, The Sky's The Limit: Passion and Property in Manhattan, insists that he got a BARGAIN and lists it as one of the top places to live there.

The book by author Steven Gaines reveals how Bono bought the apartment - which overlooks Central Park - from Apple computer founder Steve Jobs.

It claims that Jobs had just finished a massive five year renovation project on the property that had cost him $15 million - the same amount Bono is rumoured to have snapped it up for.

The book which is due out in June says that Jobs hired world famous architect IM Pei to design the apartment and ordered him to spare no expense.

Pei turned the place into a fortress and even fitted it out with 12 foot tall nickel and bronze doors and bedroom windows costing $79,000 (EUR60,000\) apiece.

Neighbours at the San Remo were so frustrated by the five years spent on the construction that they agreed to limit future renovations to 120 days.

''By the time the apartment was finished Jobs had lost interest and he never moved in,'' writes Gaines.

''The place found a new owner - Bono.''

The U2 frontman is believed to have jumped at the chance of buying up the apartment which is made up of the top two floors of the north tower of the San Remo - New York's most exclusive building.

The 17-storey building occupies a full city block while the towers add another ten stories of apartments above.Inside, two marble-lined lobbies lead residents to their spacious apartments - one of the best is believed to be Bono's.

It is described as a huge 3,500 square foot pad with a sun terrace, a room set aside for entertaining, and stunning views of Central Park.

New residents have to get the approval of the notoriously tough co-op board who turned down Madonna in 1985 - according to Gaines because she turned up in a little black dress with two big gold crucifixes on chains around her neck.

The San Remo has been home to Demi Moore, Steven Spielberg and Steve Martin.

Bono and wife Ali divide their time between France, Ireland and the US.

In Dublin the couple have two adjoining homes in the exclusive Dublin suburb of Killiney and are planning to extend to give them extra space.

Temple Hill on Vico Road overlooks Killiney Beach and the family hide away from prying eyes with nine foot walls and a giant black gate.

In the summer they retire to France where Bono and The Edge bought three adjoining homes on the French Riviera town of Eze-Sur-Mer.
