BONDS HAS DOUBLE DUTY IN WIN KEY HIT BEATS DODGERS SAN FRAN. 2, DODGERS 1.

Byline: Brian Dohn Staff Writer

SAN FRANCISCO San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  - There was an apparent blown call at second base that halted the Dodgers' potential game-winning rally, but base-running blunders, failed fundamentals and the lack of timely hits perhaps played a bigger role.

Oh, and there was also Barry Bonds' bat.

Bonds didn't hit a homer, but instead showed off his all-around offensive game as he poked a double into the left-field corner to score David Bell David Bell may refer to:

Bonds, who was 0 for 3 before the hit, had to reach for Paul Quantrill's 3-2 pitch on the outside of the plate.

With Bell running on the pitch, he scored easily as the ball fell just out of Brian Jordan's reach.

``It was a good pitch,'' Quantrill said. ``It was a very good pitch and he kept it fair. Usually, that ball slices foul and he managed to keep it fair. He reached out for it, and I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

It capped a harried ninth inning that saw the Dodgers tie it 1-1 off Giants reliever Robb Nen

Jordan scored on the play to tie it 1-1, but Paul Lo Duca Paul Anthony Lo Duca (born April 12, 1972 in Brooklyn, New York) is a catcher in Major League Baseball who plays for the New York Mets. ``We made a couple of mistakes that hurt us,'' Dodgers manager Jim Tracy said. ``I think there was a call at second base that was missed, that changed the complexion of the top of the ninth inning for us. I don't normally go to the field if there's any doubt in my mind. I think that call was missed at second base.''

However, two base-running blunders also contributed to loss.

Center fielder Dave Roberts led off the first inning with a single and stole second base, but the inning ended when he was doubled off second on a fly ball to left field. When Kent touched second base, Roberts was at home plate. Tracy said Roberts ran through a stop sign.

But it was utility player Hiram Bocachica who might have committed the most egregious of the base running mistakes.

Eric Karros led off with a double into the left field corner. After Grudzielanek flied out to center, Tracy inserted Bocachica for Karros. Beltre hit a towering drive off the center field wall, but Bocachica milled near the second base bag to tag up. The ball hit the wall and caromed to Tsuyoshi Shinjo, who threw into the infield as Bocachica was held at third.

``It's frustrating to lose a game that we had a lot of opportunities in,'' Dodgers right fielder Shawn Green said. ``There were a lot of missed chances. It's tough to win games like that, but at the same time we battled back in the ninth and had about four or five great at-bats strung together, so it's tough to lose.''

Ryan Jensen struck out Chad Kreuter, and reliever Felix Rodriguez enticed pinch-hitter Lo Duca to ground out to third to end the inning.

``We had a chance to see the replay and (Beltre) was easily safe, but what are you going to do?'' Lo Duca said. ``That play right there wasn't the outcome of the game. We had plenty of chances. I had a chance with four runners on base and didn't get it done.''

For the second time in seven days Dodgers lefty Odalis Perez pitched well, but it wasn't enough.

Perez allowed three hits in an efficient six innings. He threw just 55 pitches, walked none and struck out three, but allowed a homer to the struggling Shinjo. The Giants' leadoff hitter had just two hits in 25 at-bats before hitting Perez's 1-0 inside fastball a few rows into the left-field seats to give the Giants a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning.
